P-15's crush Summerville; take 2-0 series Lead

By C.R. Cumbee Special to The Item

SUMMERVILLE - The Sumter P-15's American Legion baseball team sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring 13 of them to build an insurmountable lead in a 26-6 rout of Summerville in Game 2 of the best-of-five playoff series on Tuesday.

Sumter can close out the series with a win Wednesday.

"Offensively, we played well," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "They gave us some runs, but I was glad we just didn't shut down. The guys battled every at-bat.

"Certainly, we want to win tomorrow night and take a little break, but we have to go out and do it," he added.

J. Tyler Smith pitched six innings, yielding six runs -- three earned -- while striking out 13. He also had a big night at the dish, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.

"'T-Right' got the job done, but I felt we should have held them (Summerville) to about three runs," said Jones.

Patrick Gordon had three hits, including a solo home run, and Jeremy Buckner added a home run and four RBI. Bruce Caldwell, Zach Sherrill and Calahan Kirkhart pitched in with two hits each.

The P-15's set the tone early as 11 men reached base before the first out was recorded. Buckner reached on an error to lead off the game and moved to second on Blake Graham's bunt single. Michael Blackmon walked to load the bases before Caldwell's grounder went through the legs of the second baseman to score the first runs of the night.

Gordon doubled home two more, Sherrill reached on an error and Smith and Kirkhart followed up with consecutive singles. Cam Martin, the last batter in the order, drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0.

Buckner continued the onslaught with an infield single and Graham was walked, setting up Blackmon's sacrifice fly to right. Sherrill drove in two runs with a double sandwiched in between RBI singles from Caldwell and Smith.

Sumter (23-2) added to their lead with a run in the second and four more in the third. They put an end to any comeback hopes from Summerville (6-13) by batting around again in the fifth, this time plating seven runs on only two hits. Smith's RBI single in the sixth inning set the game's final margin.
