Pitchers stepped up for P-15's
Sunday, August 08, 2010
COLUMBIA, Tenn. - With No. 1 starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery on the shelf, Sumter P-15's head coach Wallie Jones was worried about where the innings were going to come from for his team in the American Legion baseball Southeast Regional.
Come to find out, that wasn't his biggest concern.
The P-15's failed to find any offense in the final two games of the regional, while the pitching was more than respectable. Sumter saw its season come to an end on Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Georgia state champion Conyers Post 77 at Columbia State Community College's Dave Hall Field.
"We came in here thinking pitching was going to be our concern," Jones said. "Our pitching was wonderful each time for us. We just picked a terrible time to go in a team-wide slump."
Sumter lost Montgomery in the first inning of the championship game of the state tournament against Murrells Inlet when he tore the lateral collateral ligament from the bone in his left knee while trying to field a bunt. The P-15's went on to win the game and the title 4-2, but it knew It would have to have some pitchers step up in the regional - and they did.
Right-hander J. Tyler Smith picked up the victory in a 12-2, eight-inning win over Dyersburg, Tenn., in the opener on Thursday.
On Friday, right-hander Patrick Gordon allowed just two runs in nine innings in a 6-2, 12-inning loss to Kernersville, N.C. In the loss to Conyers, righty Jeremy Buckner allowed four earned runs in going the distance.

Sumter's season ends
Sunday, August 08, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
COLUMBIA, Tenn. - After a season full of clutch hitting, the Sumter P-15's picked the worst possible time to go into a collective hitting slump.
Sumter managed just seven hits and was shut out by Brandon Thomas of Georgia state champion Conyers Post 77 in a 5-0 loss on Saturday at Columbia State Community College's Dave Hall Field that eliminated it from the American Legion baseball Southeast Regional.
The P-15's, who finish the year with a 32-5 record, scored just two runs in a 12-inning, 6-2 loss to Kernersville, N.C., on Friday that dropped it into the losers bracket. That means they scored just two runs over their final 21 innings of the season.
Of the 27 outs recorded by the right-handed Thomas, 14 of them came via a catch.
"It was pretty much the same as the last game," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "Our whole batting practice prior to the game was hitting ground balls. It was very disappointing that we didn't give (starting pitcher Jeremy) Buckner any more support than we did."

Missed opportunities cost P-15's
Sunday, August 08, 2010
BY DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
COLUMBIA, Tenn. - The Sumter P-15's appeared to be ready to be one of the last two undefeated teams in the American Legion baseball Southeast Regional when they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning of a 2-2 game against North Carolina state champion Kernersville Post 36 on Friday.
Sumter left the runners out there though and Kernersville took advantage in the top of the 12th, scoring four runs to go on to a 6-2 victory at Columbia State Community College's Dave Hall Field.
The loss dropped Sumter, which fell to 32-4 on the season, into an elimination game against Georgia State champion Conyers Post 77 at 11 a.m. Conyers eliminated Florida state champion Boynton Beach 6-0 on Friday.
"We certainly had our chances tonight," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team left 14 runners on base, nine of them in scoring position. "We didn't produce when we had the opportunities to."

P-15's blast past Post 30
Sunday, August 08, 2010

BY DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Dyersburg, Tenn., Post 30 may not be the host of the American Legion baseball Southeast Regional, but it was very hospitable to the Sumter P-15's in the early going of their game on Thursday.
And not wanting to be ungracious, Sumter took full advantage of it.
Dyersburg starting pitcher Nick Chappell walked six batters in the first inning and Sumter mixed into two big hits to put up five runs. It added three more in the second and rolled to a 12-2 victory at Dave Hall Field on the campus of Columbia State Community College in a game that was called after eight innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Sumter will face Kernersville, N.C., today at 6 p.m. in its second game. Kernersville defeated Tuscaloosa, Ala., 8-7 in Monday's first game.
"To score those runs early were really big," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improved to 32-3 on the season. "It put us in a good position early on."

Smith shines for P-15's
Thursday, July 29, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
COLUMBIA - From his perch in center field at Capital City Stadium, Sumter's J. Tyler Smith watched teammate and starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery go to field a bunt in the first inning of the P-15's championship game against Murrells Inlet in the American Legion baseball state tournament on Wednesday.
He saw Montgomery trip and go to the ground while trying to pick up the bunt, allowing the runner to reach. Smith kept waiting for Montgomery to get up, but then he saw him holding his knee.
"I thought he would be getting up," Smith said. "When he didn't, I then started to realize that was coming in to pitch."
And pitch he did. Smith came on in relief of Montgomery with two on and no outs and pitched the rest of the way, earning the victory in the P-15's 4-2 victory that clinched the state crown and earned them a berth in next week's Southeast Regional.

Maturity, experience helped P-15's win title

COLUMBIA - When the Sumter P-15's won the American Legion baseball state tournament in 2008 on the way to both the Southeast Regional and American Legion World Series played in Shelby, N.C., both Bruce Caldwell and Michael Blackmon were starters on that team.
With a team that included the likes of Matt Talley, Travis Witherspoon, Matt Price, Tyler Christman, Tony Micklon and Quentrell Nelson, Caldwell and Blackmon were key parts, but not leaders.
After Wednesday's 4-2 victory over Murrells Inlet on Wednesday, the duo will be the leaders of a team on its way to the Southeast Regional in Columbia, Tenn., set to begin on Aug. 4.
"It feels good to be part of this and it shows that we're a really good team," said Caldwell, whose team improved to 31-3 after winning the deciding game in the state tournament at Capital City Stadium."We didn't know how far this team would go, but it was a goal to win this. The team really worked hard for it."
Caldwell was named the most valuable offensive player for the tournament, going 7-for-20 with two doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in six runs scoring three times.

P-15's win, become last unbeaten
Monday, July 26, 2010
COLUMBIA - The Sumter P-15's are the last undefeated team in the American Legion baseball state tournament, but they made their fans' hearts skip a few beats before securing that distinction.
Sumter took a 9-4 lead into the top of the ninth inning against West Columbia on Sunday. Post 79 scored three runs and left the bases loaded on a deep fly out to left field as the P-15's held on for a 9-7 victory at the Dreher High School Baseball Field next to Memorial Stadium.
"We knew we were going to have to score runs against this team," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team picked up its 30th victory in 32 games. "They are a team that comes back, comes back, comes back. We got what we needed though. All's well that ends well."
The victory means the P-15's will be in the championship round regardless of what it does today in its game against Rock Hill scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Capital City Stadium. If Sumter beats Rock Hill, the winner of the 3 p.m. game between West Columbia and Murrells Inlet will have to beat Sumter twice on Tuesday. If Rock Hill were to beat Sumter, Rock Hill would play the West Columbia-Murrells Inlet winner at 11 a.m. at Capital City Stadium on Tuesday with Sumter waiting for the winner of that game for an approximate starting time of 3 p.m. at the Dreher field.

Timely hits lift P-15's to win
Sunday, July 25, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
COLUMBIA - The Sumter P-15's didn't hit the ball well with runners in scoring position in its 6-4 victory over Richland in the opening game of the American Legion baseball state tournament on Friday. They were able to do that on Saturday against Gaffney in a winners bracket game and they needed every one of them.
Sumter had four two-out hits that accounted for six runs batted in as it defeated Post 109 9-6 at Capital City Stadium.
"We knew we were going to have to score some runs today," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improved to 29-2 on the season. "Gaffney has a good hitting team. We certainly got some big hits when we needed them."
The P-15's advance to the last undefeated game today at 7 p.m. where they will face West Columbia, which held off Rock Hill 10-8 in 10 innings on Saturday. The game will be played at the Dreher High School Baseball Field located next to Memorial Stadium on South Holley Street.

P-15's put together 6-4 win
Saturday, July 24, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
COLUMBIA - The Sumter P-15's hit the baseball solidly through the first five innings of its opening game in the American Legion state tournament against Richland Post 6 on Friday. Sumter had eight hits, but had just one run to show for it as it left seven runners on base, including five in scoring position.
The P-15's tried a different approach - somewhat unintentionally - in the sixth and the floodgates opened.
Sumter took advantage of two infield hits, a bloop double and a ball lost in the lights to plate five runs and go on to a 6-4 victory at Memorial Stadium.
"I thought we hit the ball pretty well through the early innings, but didn't have anything to show for it," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "We then got some chip shots in there and got five runs."
Sumter, which improved to 28-2 on the season, will face Gaffney today at 3 p.m. in a winners bracket game. Gaffney beat Florence 8-3 on Friday. Richland, 9-11, will face Florence today at noon in an elimination game.

P-15's advance
Friday, July 16, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
If the Sumter P-15's don't make the American Legion baseball state tournament, head coach Wallie Jones considers the season to be a disappointment.
While there may be a few low spots still ahead for Sumter, the season can't be deemed a disappointment because there is more season left to play.
The P-15's earned a spot in next week's state tournament in Columbia with a 4-0 victory over Hartsville on Thursday at Riley Park. The victory earned Sumter a 3-0 sweep of Post 53 in the best-of-five second-round series.
Sumter will go into the state tournament as the No. 1 seed from the lower state as it went undefeated in six playoff series games and owns the best runs allowed per game average at 1.50.
"It is always nice when you accomplish this," said Jones, whose team improved to 27-2 on the season.

P-15's blast Hartsville 12-1; lead series 2-0
Thursday, July 15, 2010
KELLEYTOWN -Sequels are hardly as good as the original, but for the Sumter P-15's on Wednesday Game 2, Part II was just about as good as The Godfather, Part II.
After the first try to get Game 2 of Sumter's American Legion baseball second-round state playoff series with Hartsville in failed on Tuesday because of lightning and rain, Sumter scored seven runs on just two hits and five Hartsville errors in the sixth innings en route to a 12-1 win on Wednesday.
The P-15's are up 2-0 in the series and can advance to the state tournament with a win today in Game 3 at Riley Park beginning at 7:30 p.m.
"They gave us some runs, but we kept putting pressure on them," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improves to 26-2. "They helped us some, but we were able to move some runners around."
